Why Chaiadvo

What the firm brings
to a matter

Written, considered counsel

Every engagement produces a written record. Oral discussion is supplemented by written summaries, leaving the client with a clear account of the legal position.

Plain English throughout

The firm writes for the client, not for the profession. Legal language is used where precision requires it; plain language is used everywhere else.

Malaysian law, applied precisely

All counsel is grounded in the applicable Malaysian statutes and case law. The firm does not apply generic templates — each matter is considered on its own facts.

Clear timelines communicated

The firm sets an indicative delivery period at the outset and provides interim updates where a matter takes longer than a fortnight to progress.

Professional indemnity in place

The firm carries professional indemnity cover as required by the Bar Council of Malaysia. Clients may request details of the firm's indemnity arrangements at any time.

Proportionate fee structure

Fees are stated before work begins. For documentary engagements, the firm provides an indicative range at the outset so there are no surprises at the close of a matter.

Common Questions

Questions the firm
is often asked

What does an initial enquiry involve?
An initial enquiry may be made by telephone or email. The firm will ask for a brief description of the matter and indicate, usually within two to three working days, whether it is able to assist and on what basis. There is no charge for an initial exchange.
Is a counsel letter the same as a legal opinion?
A counsel letter from Chaiadvo Legal is written counsel on the client's own question. It is not prepared for reliance by third parties — for example, financiers or counterparties — and should not be presented as such. Where a formal opinion for third-party reliance is required, the firm can discuss whether that is a service it can provide and on what additional terms.
How is the fee for a documentary engagement determined?
The indicative fee of RM 2,540 covers a standard documentary matter of moderate complexity. Where a matter is likely to require substantially more or less work, the firm will indicate an adjusted range at the outset, before any engagement begins.
Who is the Standing Counsel Year suited to?
The standing arrangement is designed for small and medium-sized Malaysian businesses that encounter legal questions at intervals throughout the year — not frequently enough to justify in-house counsel, but regularly enough to benefit from a named adviser who is familiar with the organisation's affairs.
Does the firm handle litigation or court appearances?
The firm's current services are advisory in nature — written counsel, documentary work, and standing consultation. Court appearances and litigation management are not within the current scope of the firm's services. Where a matter develops into contentious proceedings, the firm can assist the client in identifying appropriate litigation counsel.
How does the firm protect client confidentiality?
All client communications and matter materials are treated as strictly confidential in accordance with the duties imposed by the Legal Profession Act 1976 and the professional rules of the Bar Council of Malaysia. The firm does not discuss client matters with any third party without the client's written authority.
